Permits available at Pecos and Las Vegas Ranger District Offices starting March 1

SANTA FE, NM – February 24, 2023: The Santa Fe National Forest Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District will begin issuing free special use fuelwood permits for up to two cords of fuelwood from dead and down logs at Rowe Mesa. Approximately 220 cords of logs were removed from the forest while cutting fire breaks on the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon fires. Permits will be issued on a first come first serve basis and include load tags, cutting area map and guidelines for cutting fuelwood.

“It is our goal to continue to help communities impacted by the fire continue to have a source of warmth this winter. Six short loads and 6 long loads have been delivered to Rowe Mesa which totals 108 cords and 120 cords remain to be hauled for completion,” according to Paul Hancock, acting Pecos/Las Vegas District Ranger.
