Mission

Our Mission

New Vistas partners with and supports people with disabilities and families of children with special needs to enrich their quality of life in New Mexico.

We are a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, nonresidential private nonprofit agency based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, providing an array of independent living services for nine northern New Mexico Counties. 51% of staff are persons with disabilities; 51% of Board of Directors are persons with disabilities; and providing five core services of advocacy, independent living skills training, peer support, information and referral, and transition.

New Vistas EI program goes live with Provider Soft for case management during COVID-19 pandemic. New Vistas offers support and input to all state EI agencies looking to make a similar transition.

New Vistas invests in move to increase technology to support telehealth services and move to computer based case management services for all programs. New Vistas becomes first early intervention provider in New Mexico to implement Provider Soft case management software.

New Vistas awarded its first contract from the National Council on Independent Living(NCIL) to complete accessibility surveys for local medical and mental health facilities in northern New Mexico.

New Vistas welcomed two new early intervention providers to Santa Fe County and assisted with the development of the first EI Providers Partnership group to support all agencies in serving eligible families and children within the county. New Vistas also experiences its second change in leadership as the organization’s second executive director retired after 20 years with the agency.

New Vistas plans and hosts first Summer Play Group for children in our early intervention program. The group, called Walk, Talk and Wiggle, brought together 12 children to engage in activities designed to support social skill development, communication and mobility skills while also offering parents an opportunity to network.

New Vistas production center is altered to include a new microbusiness initiative to explore ways to expand employment opportunities in rural/frontier communities.

New Vistas establishes a Legislative Action Team to increase systems advocacy efforts and increase education on legislative priorities for people with disabilities.

New Vistas opens the Native American Liaison Program serving New Mexico tribal communities.

New Vistas applied for contract through NM DVR to support tribal members with disabilities in connecting with NM DVR services. New Vistas also becomes one of two CILs in NM to provide Benefits Advisement to individuals with disabilities receiving SSI or SSDI benefits.

New Vistas moves to support the philosophy of consumer choice, consumer control and independent living by closing residential programs and sheltered workshop. Focus shifts to assisting people with disabilities to achieve integrated employment and find resources to live independently within their chosen communities.

New Vistas received accreditation by Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for all residential services. Established the first regional TTY relay service program, which expanded to provide statewide services for the hearing impaired.

New Vistas became the first local program to establish community living support services as an alternative to group residential home services. New Vistas also founded satellite IL program in Las Cruces. This program has since expanded and has become a stand-alone, independent Center for Independent Living.

New Vistas established a unique partnership with local hospitals to serve premature children at risk for developmental delays. New Vistas also became one of four non-profits to partner with the State of New Mexico to develop and implement “Supported Employment” programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
